Frequently asked questions
Overflow is an online giving platform for churches and nonprofits that helps you accept cash, stock, crypto, and DAF gifts in one unified church giving platform, with analytics, migration support, and donor help built in.
Both. You can be billed monthly or annually, and annual billing typically comes with a discount. If cash flow makes monthly the easier lift for your church, that is a perfectly normal way to start.
Growth and enterprise-level churches have a one-time implementation fee, which reflects the additional scope involved: multi-campus configuration, larger data migrations, deeper integration work, and dedicated hands-on onboarding. That fee is quoted up front as part of your proposal, never added later.
Yes. Overflow's Information Security Program follows the criteria set by the SOC 2 Framework, and we undergo independent third-party assessments and penetration testing of our security and compliance controls. In practice that means:
- All data is hosted on Amazon Web Services and stored on databases located in the United States.
- Sensitive information such as financial data is encrypted at rest, and all applications encrypt in transit with TLS/SSL.
- Access to sensitive systems follows least-privilege principles, with single sign-on, two-factor authentication, and quarterly access reviews.
- Every team member passes a background check, signs a confidentiality agreement, and completes security awareness training.
- Backup and disaster recovery run through our hosting provider, with monitoring and a documented incident response process behind it.
- Overflow never has access to or stores your donors' brokerage account credentials.
Full details on all of the above on Overflow's Security Page.
Admin users are included in your subscription. Multi-campus organizations are priced at the organization level rather than per site, with campaign-level reporting and fund mapping built in.
The redesigned reporting home page takes reporting to a new level of ease and efficiency. With a seamless interface, you can quickly switch between pre-configured and custom reports, providing immediate access to the most vital financial insights. Whether you’re reviewing overall donations or drilling down into specific trends, the new dashboard simplifies the process of extracting and analyzing the data that matters most to your organization. Overflow explored App Clips very quickly after Apple’s announcement of the feature, but ultimately chose not to support them because they introduce friction for guests and limit what churches can do with Tap. Our goal is to ensure the simplest, most flexible, cross-platform tap experience for every person in the room - without exceptions.
Here are the core reasons:
1. App Clips create a split experience between iOS and Android
App Clips are an Apple-only technology.
If Tap relied on App Clips:
• iPhone users would see one experience
• Android users would be routed somewhere else entirely
This instantly breaks the unified, predictable moment churches want - especially during worship, giving, or guest connection.
Overflow Tap was intentionally built to be platform-agnostic, ensuring every person, on every device, gets the same simple, instant pathway.
2. App Clips limit the ability to redirect dynamically
A key benefit of Overflow Tap is the ability to change your destination URL in real time - even mid-service.
App Clips, however:
• Do not support dynamic redirect logic
• Do not allow you to instantly point an NFC tag to a changing link
• Require a fixed App Clip experience that can’t adapt on the fly
Churches need flexibility: a giving moment in worship, a QR replacement during announcements, a guest form for a special Sunday.
App Clips simply can’t support that level of agility.
3. App Clips constrain the kinds of content and flows churches can use
App Clips
• Restrict what you can show on screen
• Limit customization
• Don’t support rich, multi-step, or branded experiences
• Cannot deliver the same flexibility as a standard Overflow dynamic link
Overflow Tap is built to support any ministry moment, not a narrow App Clip template.
4. App Clips introduce friction - especially for first-time guests
One of the most important design goals for Overflow Tap is zero hesitation.
App Clips can:
• Ask for permission modals
• Take longer to load
• Present an unfamiliar Apple UI shell
• Feel more like an app download than a simple next step
In worship moments, that hesitation matters. Overflow chose the experience where the fewest things can go wrong - and the most people can participate.
5. App Clips cannot interact cleanly with ProPresenter flows
Many churches integrate Overflow Tap into their service flow using ProPresenter.
Because App Clips are controlled by iOS and can’t be influenced by external systems, they can:
• Interrupt service-driven transitions
• Fail to open consistently from ProPresenter’s controlled environment
• Break synchronization between the screen moment and the tap moment
Dynamic URLs from Overflow, by contrast, always work, regardless of device, OS, or display environment.
6. Overflow Tap is built for ministry use cases that App Clips weren’t designed for
App Clips work best for:
• Micro product demos
• Small app previews
• Simple one-off utilities
They were not built for:
• Generosity workflows
• Conversion tracking
• Cross-platform guest pathways
• Multi-use ministry moments
• Instant link changes
Overflow Tap needs to serve giving, next steps, registrations, guest connection, and more. App Clips cannot support that mission.
Why Overflow Doesn’t Use App Clips
In short:
• They only work on iOS
• They cannot support dynamic redirection
• They limit customization and future flexibility
• They introduce friction into spiritual moments
• They don’t play well with ProPresenter
• They weren’t designed for generosity or next-step engagement
Overflow Tap was built to ensure that everyone can take a next step instantly, no app download, no delays, no surprises.
It’s the simplest path for people - and the most flexible tool for churches.
Your church can accept credit and debit, ACH, Apple Pay and Google Pay, as well as stock, crypto, Donor Advised Fund (DAF) grants, and RoundUps™. All of these flow into one online giving platform for churches so reporting stays simple.
Tap is at its most powerful paired with the Overflow giving platform. Run both and every gift lands in one dashboard, so you can see exactly which donations were sourced from a Tap, what they totaled, and how giving in the room stacks up against giving online. That is visibility most churches have never had. Launching together also means one supported rollout: a single migration, one round of team training, and one announcement to your church instead of two.
Cryptocurrencies that are compliant and accepted within the United States are available to give through Overflow's crypto donation processing platform. Please refer to The Giving Block website for an up-to-date list of supported cryptocurrencies. If you are interested in giving a coin that you don't see supported, please email support@overflow.co. It is sometimes possible to facilitate your donation off-platform depending on the type of coin and gift value
Yes. Fee coverage is an optional setting your church turns on in the dashboard. When it is enabled, donors are offered the choice to cover the processing fee on their gift at checkout. It is the church's call whether to offer it at all, and the donor's call whether to accept, so nobody is forced into it.
Overflow supports the transfer of any publicly-traded stock that is exchanged on the US stock market. Overflow also supports the transfer of ETFs and Mutual Funds, but there may be brokerage-imposed restrictions on the transfer depending on the fund and gift value. If that is the case, Overflow’s concierge services will work with you directly to understand the restrictions and implications.
Every plan includes all giving methods in one place: credit and debit, ACH, Apple Pay and Google Pay, stock, crypto, DAF grants, and RoundUps. It also includes the reporting dashboard, admin users, migration and implementation support, and our donor support team handling givers directly so your staff does not have to.
When a donor gives an appreciated asset such as stock or crypto directly, rather than selling it first and giving the proceeds, they may avoid capital gains tax on the appreciation and may be able to deduct the full fair market value of the gift, subject to IRS rules. In practice that often means a donor can give meaningfully more at the same personal cost, which is why churches that turn on non-cash giving frequently see larger individual gifts. Overflow handles the transfer mechanics on both sides. Donors should confirm their own situation with a tax advisor.
Overflow connects to the church management and accounting systems most churches already run. See the full, current list on our integrations page.
A Donor Advised Fund is an investment account created for charitable giving. Donors can give to your church from a DAF and, in many cases, receive tax advantages compared to giving cash. Overflow makes it easier to route those DAF gifts directly to your ministry.
Yes. Overflow can handle payments that are not tax-deductible gifts, kept separate from donations so your giving records and year-end statements stay clean.
The main benefit of a DAF is the ability to make a donation and take an immediate tax deduction for it while waiting to decide how the donation should actually be used. While the donation is irrevocable, it can grow tax-free in the DAF via investment while the decision is being contemplated.
You can be live on the Overflow giving platform within one day of completing onboarding, and from there we move at whatever speed you are comfortable with. Depending on the size of your church, you will either get started on your own or meet our team for a welcome call, and we will run the migration together from there.
Now that you know more about DAFs and their benefits it’s time to initiate the donation! Simply click the Donate from DAF button on your nonprofit’s give page or select the Donate from DAF option as a payment method within the cash donation experience.
Yes. You can bring up to three years of historical giving data with you, so donor records and giving history carry over rather than starting from zero on day one.
It depends! Overflow can process all whole shares of publicly traded stock, including from retirement accounts (401K, 403b, Roth IRA, and Traditional IRA). However, donors will incur a tax penalty if they remove retirement funds early (before age 59.5) and some employer-sponsored retirement plans will not allow early fund distribution at all. Because of these restrictions and potential penalties, we highly recommend consulting your tax professional before donating these types of assets. If you decide to proceed, Overflow’s concierge services will work with you directly to facilitate the transfer of these assets.
We do. Overflow's donor support team works directly with your givers, including on the more involved stock, crypto, and DAF transfers, so your staff is not the help desk. Your donors get a real person, and your team gets their time back.
Yes. Overflow can help facilitate stock gifts from many major brokerage accounts and supports eligible gifts from certain retirement accounts, depending on the donor’s situation. Our donor support team guides givers through each step so your staff does not have to. Visit our Donor Help Center to learn more!
